Eye Movement Therapies (EMDR & EMIT)

Practical, gentle, and effective.

Eye movement therapies help the brain process stuck memories and sensations so the body can settle and the mind can move forward.

I offer EMDR and Eye Movement Integration Therapy (EMIT) in Bendigo, supporting adults and adolescents both in person and online across Australia. Sessions are safe, supportive, inclusive, and always judgement free.

What Is Eye Movement Integration Therapy (EMIT)?

Eye Movement Integration Therapy uses guided sets of eye movements to help the nervous system resolve unprocessed memories, images, and body sensations.

We begin by building strong inner resources so you feel steady and supported. We then work at your pace with clear targets and a simple rhythm that helps the brain link what happened with what you know now.

Many people notice more space in the body, less overwhelm, and a greater sense of calm.

EMIT highlights

  • Strong focus on safety and resource building

  • Targets images, sensations, and beliefs

  • Works well with creative approaches and parts-informed work

What Is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing is a structured therapy that uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain move traumatic material from the raw, unprocessed now into the safe, finished then.

When the brain’s alarm system is no longer hijacking the body, the thinking brain can step in, calm the nervous system, and allow real change.

EMDR highlights

  • Eight-phase framework with careful preparation

  • Based on the Adaptive Information Processing model

  • Flexible and integrative at every step

How Eye Movement Therapies Help

Eye movement therapies can help to:

Soften trauma and anxiety
Settle body sensations, reduce reactivity, and quiet intrusive images.

Untangle grief and loss
Make room for memory and meaning without the same intensity.

Shift stuck beliefs
Move from I am not safe to I can handle this now.

Ease somatic distress and pain
Support the nervous system to down-regulate and recover.

Improve performance and confidence
Clear emotional blocks that limit movement and expression.

Understanding How EMDR and EMIT Work

When something overwhelming happens, the brain and body shift into survival mode. The thinking brain steps back, the alarm system takes over, and the experience may not be stored properly.

Instead, it can remain frozen in the nervous system. That’s why years later, certain sounds, images, or sensations can still trigger anxiety or emotional overwhelm.

EMDR and EMIT help the brain return to these experiences with support and safety, allowing them to be processed and stored in the past where they belong.

You do not need to retell or relive traumatic experiences in detail. We bring things to mind lightly, while eye movements support the brain to do what it is designed to do — resolve and integrate.

What Else Can EMDR and EMIT Help With?

Eye movement therapies are often helpful when talk therapy alone hasn’t shifted things. They can support work with:

  • Anxiety and panic

  • Phobias and fears

  • Grief and complicated loss

  • Low self-esteem and shame

  • Chronic stress and burnout

  • Performance anxiety

  • Chronic pain with an emotional component

  • Medical or dental trauma

  • Life transitions and emotional overload

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I need to retell my trauma in detail?
No. We can work effectively with very little narrative if that feels safer.

How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your goals and history. We decide together and review often.

Is EMDR or EMIT safe?
Yes. Safety comes first. You can pause at any time.

Does it work online?
Yes. With a stable connection and a private space, online sessions can be just as effective.

Can this be combined with parts work or solution-focused therapy?
Yes. These approaches integrate well and can support clarity, choice, and resilience.
